it was unusual for the kids to be completely left on their own, even though the eldest was 12, if no one else my grandmother was always usually there, she herself in earlier years had had to leave her own daughters alone all day so she could work to keep them alive, she had no option, that or starvation with no exergeration, i wonder what today's social workers would have made of that, she would lock them in but trained her eldest to scream out of the window should any of them fall ill or have a serious accident, her eldest was but 7 when instructed so, and one day it did happen
